J. K. Aksamit was raised in a thoroughly Czech home. He graduated from Crete High School in 1941.
Aksamit served in Swansea (South Wales) and was a part of the allied forces that stormed France's Normandy Beach during D-Day invasion. He returned to Crete, worked in the post office and attended Doane College.
His wife was Emily Kozlik (marriage on Jan 29, 1950). He served between 1951 and 1970 in US Air Force in Maine, Louisiana, New Mexico, France, Missouri, Nevada, Crete, Vietnam, Denver and England. He worked as a councelor and after Emily's death, he returned to Crete and worked as travel consultant. He had two sons - Jim and Tom and daughter Linda. Roscoe Aksamit was his brother.
